Case Study: Improving Emergency Preparedness for a Manufacturing Company

Problem:

A manufacturing company had an emergency preparedness plan in place, but the staff were struggling to contextualize it and understand their responsibilities. Additionally, the organization was having difficulty getting staff support for drills, and leadership felt that the plan needed a fresh perspective.

Solution:

With decades of experience in emergency management, we were brought in to review the existing emergency preparedness plan and provide guidance on how to improve it. We followed the principles of emergency preparedness, including risk assessment, planning, training, and resource management, to identify areas where the plan could be strengthened.

We then supported the operations director in planning a tabletop exercise for leadership to ensure they understood the plan and their responsibilities. Next, we worked with the operations director to communicate the plan to the wider organization, including training staff to respond to emergencies.

Finally, we supported the operations director by walking alongside them through two drills and then observed how the director and leadership team responded during the third drill.

Results:

Through a revision of the plan, support, and coaching to the operations director, they were able to create, train, and sustain a robust emergency operations program. As a result, the organization was able to contextualize their emergency preparedness plan, and staff were able to understand their roles and responsibilities in the event of an emergency.

Conclusion:

Working with Kingswood helped the manufacturing company improve their emergency preparedness and create a robust emergency operations program that will serve them well in the future. Our guidance and support helped the organization understand their risks, plan and communicate more effectively, and train staff to respond to emergencies, ensuring that they are fully prepared to minimize the impact of any potential emergency.
